It is found that over the weekends, their server dies and often this continues till Monday morning (or even, in some cases, Monday afternoon).

How to know if your server is not functional:

• Click on START. Go to PROGRAMS. Click on ACCESSORIES. You will now see the icon for the Command Prompt. When you click on this link, you will get a black screen with the C: and a flashing cursor.
• Type the following: ping 192.168.1.1 (This is for BSNL users only and this is the IP address of the server. You should see the following:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

This indicates the your modem is connected to the server and is working fine.

• Now type the following at the C:

Tracert www.google.com

If your server is down you will see the following message:

Unable to resolve target system name google.com.

What 1Jayanagar.comis doing to reduce this:

We are filing a Right To Information (RTI) request with BSNL asking why the server is down so often, what steps they are taking to remedy the situation etc.

If you find that your net connection is frequently down, and if you are a resident of Jayanagar, please send us an email giving the details (such as when the connectivity failed, when it was restored etc.) This will help us in tackling BSNL more effectively.
